Conveniently located in the west end of Winston-Salem, 6th Sense has been a downtown staple since 1997. What started as a center for therapeutic massage has transformed over time into a complete holistic health and wellness center. Around 2003, co-owners Nike Roach and Nikki Ferguson-Roach decided that they needed to focus on providing total body wellness in the community. Nikki said, “Massage therapy had become very popular and there was a lot of competition popping up. We realized that we would be better suited to provide our clients with a variety of holistic services to help them have a complete care plan centered around health and wellness. It was at that time that we changed our name from 6th Sense Therapeutic Massage to 6th Sense Health and Wellness Center.” They went on to add a variety of services that would help them provide their clients with the best care possible.
The primary services available at 6th Sense Health and Wellness are therapeutic massage, nutrition, and acupuncture.
The massage component of the center aims to relieve tension, increase flexibility and provide relaxation through a variety of service options. Options include but are not limited to Swedish, deep tissue, sports, acupressure, reflexology, and hot stone massages.
Nutrition is also a very important part of the services provided at 6th Sense. They can work with you on your goals, from overall health to weight loss or gain. By testing food intolerance, they can help determine a nutritional plan to provide optimal health specific to your body’s needs.
Acupuncture provides the opportunity to balance the natural flow of energy through the body. This includes general acupuncture, cupping, and gua sha.
The Benefits of Acupuncture
After having a personal experience where they saw first hand the benefits of acupuncture, the 6th Sense owners knew they had to include this as part of their wellness services. This ancient technique is used to balance the body’s energy and can be used to treat and prevent a variety of illnesses, both physical and mental health related. They have recently seen an increase in veteran clientele, as the VA is now covering this service as a form of treatment for some patients. It is also very popular with women as it can be used to treat a variety of female-specific issues.
6th sense Health and Wellness Center provides three types of acupuncture services
- General Acupuncture is an ancient technique of traditional Chinese medicine in which extremely thin needles are placed into specific points on the body by a highly skilled practitioner. This technique has been practiced for over 2,500 years in China and aims to correct imbalances in the natural flow of energy, which can treat and prevent illness.
- Cupping involves the use of glass or plastic suction cups to create a “negative pressure massage.” This non-invasive technique can be used to treat a variety of illnesses and is very successful in treating muscular pain, bone pain, and spasms, particularly in the back and shoulders.
- Gua Sha is a very safe technique that aids in the movement of waste containing fluids from the body. By raising petechiae, pinpoint red spots, on the surface of the skin, waste is removed from the areas in the surface tissues and muscles where it has been collecting. This is used to help the body improve circulation and metabolic processes. It is also a great treatment for many types of internal and external pain, and many acute and chronic disorders.
